摘要
The purpose of this paper is to provide relevant evidence to understand the effects of selfie culture on the standard of beauty among young Hong Kong women. It is necessary to understand the various toxic effects of beauty standards, as well as the issue with beauty pressure that women are subjected to. The hypothesis is that selfies create unrealistic beauty standards by shifting the focus to the individual and their face. The objective of the survey and interviews is to understand and confirm the hypothesis that selfies indeed create unrealistic beauty standards among young Hong Kong women. The survey and interview results conclude that people generally find themselves more attractive after editing their selfies. The interviewees claim that because the selfie places more focus on them, it prompts them to appear as perfect as possible. The conclusion supports the hypothesis, and thus it is important to raise awareness of such aspects.
